Green algae
A thin unicellular film that spreads across tiles, north-facing walls and shaded verges. It creates the slippery green sheen most homeowners notice first. Left untreated it thickens and creates conditions for moss and lichen to follow.
Black algae
Gloeocapsa magma — the organism behind the dark streaks and black spot staining on concrete and clay tiles. It produces a UV-resistant pigment sheath that makes it one of the most persistent roof contaminants. Standard washing alone rarely fully removes it.
Red algae
More common in coastal and high-moisture areas — Rosslare, Curracloe and Kilmuckridge in particular. Red and reddish-brown tonal staining on roof tiles and fascia boards is often red algae or a mixed colony. Biocide treatment is highly effective.
Lichen
A composite organism — part algae, part fungus — that physically bonds into tile and slate surfaces. It's the hardest roof growth to remove because the holdfast anchors itself below the surface layer. It requires a dwell-time biocide treatment and often a follow-up visit.
Moss
The most visible and common roof growth in Ireland. Moss cushions collect debris and hold moisture, which accelerates tile degradation and gutter blockages over time. It's treated with manual removal and followed by a suitable biocide to suppress regrowth.
Organic staining
When multiple organisms — green algae, black algae, red algae, moss spores and airborne debris — colonise and die across a surface over years, they leave a layered stain that reads as general darkening or discolouration. Common on concrete tiles, block paving and rendered walls.

What causes green, black or red staining on roof tiles?

Red or reddish-brown tonal staining typically indicates red algae, which is more common near coastal areas in Wexford.
What is the difference between moss removal and roof treatment?
Moss removal is the physical clearing of moss from the tile surface. Roof treatment applies a biocide solution to kill the root structure, algae, lichen and spores that manual removal cannot reach. For lasting results — particularly where regrowth has recurred — treatment is recommended alongside or instead of removal alone.
