A wall up here catches weather from the south-west and the north-east, so a paint job has to work harder than most. Whatever is living in the render when the coat goes on is what decides whether it lasts a decade or eighteen months.
You cannot tell them apart the week they are finished. Two winters of hedgerow weather sorts that out.
The visible growth is gone and the wall looks ready, but the colony bedded in the surface is alive and now sealed under a film. On ground that takes wind-driven rain from two sides, the edges of that film are exactly where the weather works, and where the growth is pushing from behind.
The organism is killed in the surface, the wall is given the time it needs to finish and dry, and the coat goes onto something stable. It grips the way the manufacturer tested it to, and the weather has to work considerably harder to find an edge.

The Gutter Check takes under a minute. An overflowing gutter above a freshly painted wall is the quickest way to undo the whole job, and it is easily sorted beforehand.

If the house is being painted, the roof and gutters want doing before the coat rather than after. Nothing then drops onto fresh paint.

A wash removes what is visible, which makes the wall look ready. The growth in the surface is still alive underneath, and a fresh coat gives it a dark, sheltered place to carry on. A biocide treatment beforehand deals with that properly, and it is a small cost against repainting early.
Long enough for the treatment to finish working and the surface to dry properly. We give you a straight answer for your own walls rather than a rule of thumb, because it depends on the weather and the substrate. Getting that gap right is what makes the paint job last.
