Windblown sand off the dunes
Curracloe Strand, Ballinesker and the Raven Point dunes put fine sand into the air on any breezy day, and it settles on the roof slope and washes down into the run. It is heavy, it does not float off, and it goes straight to the bottom of the channel.
Salt film that holds everything else
Sea air leaves a fine film on the roofline after every wet or windy spell. On its own it does nothing. What it does is stop the next shower rinsing the sand through, so each spell adds to the last.
Then the rain arrives all at once
An Irish downpour delivers more water in ten minutes than a gutter is built to carry when it is half full of sand. That is the moment you see it come over the front, and it is the only warning most houses get.

Does an overflowing gutter mean it is broken?
Usually not. A gutter that has been carrying water for years and suddenly comes over the front is nearly always full rather than faulty. Clearing it is the first thing to try, and it is the cheaper answer by a distance.
Why does sand end up in a gutter at all?
It blows off the dunes and the strand, lands on the roof slope and is washed down into the channel by the next shower. Nothing unusual about it here — it is simply what this stretch of coast puts on a roofline instead of leaves.
