This is close country. The hedges stand tall right up to the road, the lanes are narrow, and whatever a passing tractor throws up has nowhere to go but onto the nearest wall and window. You will notice it first on the gable that faces the road. Anyone who has tried to reverse a car past a hedge cutter on one of these roads knows how little room there is.
On a wide road dust spreads out and settles. On your lane it does not get the chance. A trailer going by at head height puts grit and dried muck straight at the front of the house, and the closer your gable sits to the road, the more of it your windows take. Measure the gap from your front wall to the tarmac and you have a decent guess at how often you will want us.
The farming year does most of the damage in a few short bursts. Cutting weeks and harvest put more traffic past your gate in a fortnight than the rest of the season manages, and what lands on your glass then is greasy rather than dry. That kind of film wants proper work to lift. A garden hose will not shift it, and neither will a shower, which is why the front of the house can stay dull through a wet October.
Adamstown sits low, and mornings here hold the mist longer than higher ground does. Dust landing on a damp pane will not blow off again; it turns to a fine paste and sets. Leave it into the winter and you are looking through it until somebody takes it off properly.
